3 Day Water Fasting

Since I have eaten so horribly for a while, I decided to go on a 3 day water fast to jump-start my ketosis and clear my body of all the toxins I have put into it. In my research, I have learned a lot that I thought I would like to share in case you would like to go on this journey with me! I have done 24 hour fasts and intermittent fasting with no problem but never a 72 hour fast so I do feel a bit scared. I am using my favorite fasting app “Zero”, to help me count the time and give me some motivation and accountability.

Here is the plan I have decided to do:

  • Day 1- Water only. No additives at all.
  • Day 2- Water only. No additives at all. 
  • Day 3- Water only. No additives at all. 
  • Day 4- Water only. Add lemon juice
  • Day 5- Water(with lemon juice and stevia) and bone broth
  • Day 6- Two small light meals 8 hours apart
  • Day 7- Go back to normal IF. 16:8

In my research, I have found that this is just as beneficial to the mind as it is your physical body and that is what I am all about. I know I shouldn’t eat this, but why do I want it so bad? Why have I shown no self-control all of these years? This fast not only proves mental capability, but it is highly recommended to pay attention to how you feel throughout the process to learn your body and mind. A lot of people also advised to do yoga and/or meditation during the fast to think with a clear mind. This is what sold me as I have been trying yoga every morning and I even tried meditating! I really love the yoga and I am excited to practice meditation more so I can see all of the true effects.

Benefits of doing a 72 hour water fast:

  • A three-day water fast will give tremendous health benefits. Our digestive system works without any rest, day and night. A fast will give the much-needed rest to the entire digestive system to repair and heal itself. Toxins are removed and one feels improved energy.
  • Fasting can improve immunity and gives longevity.
  • Fasting is the easiest way to lose weight. One may lose anything from 1 – 3 kg during a 3-day fast. But you will gain back most of this weight once you return to normal food. Following a controlled diet after the fast can help in maintaining the weight reduction. Fasting can also be integrated with yoga management for further benefits.   • During the fast, one gets to observe the mind closely. It helps to understand of our food habits and cravings. This understanding helps to control the diet after the fast, thereby helping in weight loss.
  • Helps kick start ketosis!

Why water fasting induces a ketogenic state

So what’s this have to do with ketosis? A quick biology primer: The digestive cycle includes two phases—anabolic and catabolic. During the anabolic phase, you’re eating and digesting, while during the catabolic phase, you’re living off stored calories and nutrients. During the first phase, the body stores glycogen as glucose—a simple sugar that your brain counts on for energy once you’ve reached the resting, catabolic phase. Skip a meal (or three) though, and your glucose supply will eventually run out.

It doesn’t want to waste muscle tissue,” explains Dr. Fuhrman. “So after it sees that no food is coming, after like 16-24 hours of not eating, the brain develops the ability to accept ketones [from fat stores] as an alternative fuel to save muscle.” Cue weight loss, energy, mental clarity, and more.

Yes, this is essentially the same thing that happens when you’re eating a low-carb, high-fat diet—your body is forced to adapt to burning fat for fuel. So why go to the extreme of cutting out food altogether? Since you’re still eating and digesting on the keto diet, the autophagy benefits don’t occur. And, remember, autophagy isn’t believed to kick in until you’ve reached the 24-hour mark with no food—so even keto-style intermittent fasting isn’t likely to get you there.
